Bio

Marla Shauer is a PhD candidate in the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing with a DE in Feminist Theory and Methods from UC Davis. She is a Certified Nurse Midwife (received her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000) with a health care provider career including both inpatient and outpatient as well as a freestanding birth center care for women and people seeking reproductive care, gynecologic, postpartum, and birth care across the US over the past 23 years. Her research queries are focused on how perinatal mistreatment, respect, and autonomy are impacted when women and/or birthing peoples experienced unplanned obstetric interventions during their perinatal care. She utilizes a collaborative, midwifery lens as well as intersectional feminist frameworks to grapple with quantitative questions, as well as a qualitative exploration into birth stories and how we can learn from birthing people about different key aspects of their birth experience.
