Bio

em irvin (they/them) performs alongside clay and ceramic materials as a PhD candidate in Performance Studies at the University of California Davis. Their work attends to the relations and passages through which ceramics are continually re-created, not only through clay and its transformations, but also through ways of teaching and learning how to work with clay. They hold an MFA in Arts Practices with an emphasis in ceramics from the University of Colorado Boulder. irvin’s work has been exhibited and presented internationally, with selected exhibitions including the NCECA Annual at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA); the Biennale of Contemporary Keramics at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Santorini, Greece (Second Prize); and The Doers at the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (CICA) Museum in South Korea. Selected residencies and studio programs include MALT AIR in Ebeltoft, Denmark (forthcoming), Sealed Earth in Athens, Greece, C.R.E.T.A. in Rome, Italy, and Baltimore Clayworks in Maryland, US. Their  research has appeared in publications including GPS/Performance Research: On Hunger, Emergency Index: An Annual Document of Performance Practice, Studio Potter, Rejoinder, and Buzz-Zine, where their work appeared on the cover. Their work has also been presented through the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), the Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts (SLSA), and the Wenner-Gren Foundation’s Dreaming as Relation, Method, and Forms of Life workshop. irvin is co-editor, with artist Jasmine Baetz, of the forthcoming volume Ceramic Snap: Confronting Misogyny in American Studio Ceramics.
